Marine: –

Odisha has 480 km long coastline with rich marine biodiversity. Some species are Horseshoe crab, Bottlenose dolphin, Irrawady Dolphins, Hammer headed shark, Finless porpoise, Belin whales, Blacktip reef shark, live stone, sea wheap, sea slogs, live rocks, Bivalas, sea fan and a small coral reef.

The world of cetacean diversity include about 91 species, in which 15 Baleen Whales, 26 species Toothed Whales, 44 species of Dolphins and 6 species of Porpoises.

In India 32 species of Cetaceans(35.2%) comprises with 6 species of Baleen Whales(40%), 25 species of Toothed Whales and Dolphins(35.7%) and a single species of Porpoises.

In Odisha 20 Species of cetaceans (21.9% global, 62.5% India) includes 3 species of True Whales(20% global, 50% india), 14 species of Dolphins(20% global. 54% India) and one species of porpoise(16.7% global, 100% India)

Threats: –

  • Whales have least threat from fishing practices in Odisha.
  • Increasing anthropogenic noise is a concern for all whales, those use low frequency sound waves for communication.
  • Pathological conditions, increase level of pollution and oil spillage pose serious threats to these species and its prey base.
  • Red tide phenomena, toxic algae bloom also a big threat to this species.

Activities: –

  • Identification of species using our chart.
  • Photographs and GPS location of species.
  • Awareness among fisherman communities to help in their conservation.
  • Presentation and participation of cetacean’s census throughout coastal districts and motivate forest and fisheries department for more patrolling during feeding hours.
  • Coastal and estuaries clean up drives for a healthy and diverse nation.
  • Documenting dead cetacean species throughout Odisha coast.
