Pallas’s Fish Eagle   Wetlands for global importance

Pallas’s fish eagle is an endangered species and at the brink of extinction in Odisha. Only 3-5 individuals are left/documented in Odisha.Our aim is to create, manage and mitigate threats towards this species by engaging communities and involving them in conservation of the species through ethically as well as economically.

Our recent activity aims to conserve the species in its natural habitat by practicing proper methods of conservation engaging communities, for which the species future can be saved at this particular location.

Like other avian species Pallas’s fish eagle also facing threats by naturally as well as man-made. While natural threats like natural calamities are common to Odisha, it damages nesting, roosting sites. Man made threats includes – Prey stealing by human’s from nest, Illegal prawn gheris, exotic tree plantation, loss of habitats, plastic pollution, loss of ethical beliefs, excessive use of diesel boats for tourism/fishing purpose, poaching / poisoning of birds, pesticide contamination at both agricultural lands and water bodies. This apart threats includes – lack of inviolate spaces for bird, Lack of coordination and failure of department between local inhabitants.

Also, extraction of reed grass, multiple boat routes disturbs the roosting sites of pallas’s fish eagle,manmade forest fire, over grazing, can’t be avoidable.

Pallas’s Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) is a wetland dependant raptor species  mostly residing at  Chilika which is also a RAMSAR site. Chilika Lake is the largest brackish water lake with estuarine character that sprawls along the east coast of India. It is considered to be the largest lagoon in India and counted amongst the largest lagoons in the world.

That particular area is fishermen dominated area, most of the people dependent upon Chilika for their livelihood. The coasts are dominated by casurina, acacia, cashew plantations. the habitat degradation mostly cause due to eco-tourism and plastic waste.

Our activity carries 360 degree capacity building to manage and mitigate such threats to conserve the species along with community through multiple reach out initiatives as well demolishing the gaps between communities and department.

a) Increased presence of Pallas’s fish eagle in and around specific community sites. b) Increased participation of traditional dwellers in conservation initiatives. c) Increase voluntary activities in educational institution for wildlife conservation. d) Decreasing participation in poaching, poisoning and hunting activities. e) Involvement of people in. f) Artificial nesters will help to provide nesting and roosting to the species for long term survival. g) Constant approach towards local for alternative livelihood will decrease degradation of wetlands. h) We will promote this species as a flagship species to our state. Hence, this species will be receive the state bird of Odisha. i) Alternatives of mechanized boats (renewable energy) will be facilitated through Forest Department & CDA for which entire eco system including Irrawaddy dolphins, Pallas’s fish eagle and other avifauna’s will be benefited. j) Development of positive attitude in human animal conflict phases.
