As an indicator fishing cat plays an important character in the wetland diversity. A very little known about the ecology and behaviour of the fishing cat (Prionailurus Viverrinus) with much of the information being in the form of anecdotal observations and sight records. Recent survey suggests that fishing cat population are in decline with last surviving population left in wild. There is a severe paucity of recent records in some parts of human dominated areas. There are no recent records from some potential areas due to Human-Fishing Cat conflict and in the other hand only limited appropriate survey effort in these areas. Primary research reveals a declining population facing an array of severe threats from habitat destruction to active prosecution due to perceived conflict. A high mortality (> 50%) Fishing cat population occurs due to poaching, retribution killing are to be addressed on an urgent basis.

Here at Bramhagiri, Fishing Cat is strongly associated with water bodies, marshland, constituting tall bed forming graminoid species like the reed the reedmace, cultivated grass and swamps. Study demonstrates that protection of resources such as food and daytime resting sites and reduction of poaching can ensure the persistence of the Fishing Cat in human modified agricultural landscape. So, we can conserve the entire wetland ecosystem with the presence of Fishing Cats.

Considering the devastating decline of fishing cat population all over the coastal region of the district, an area with such richness and so little protection and nonrecognition by any govt. needs urgent attention. More over the isolation of this habitat makes this wildlife population here extremely vulnerable. The return of some endangered bird species and establishment of a hitherto non-existence elephant population are incidence which further press the importance of wildlife heaven with extremely high potential that needs urgent attention. That apart, these wetlands are the store house of many fresh water streams that drain into Chilika lake and crucial in maintaining the lakes delicately balanced brackish water ecosystem. 

On preliminary stage we now visiting most of the potential areas where fishing cats are suffering, keeping ourselves informed about day-to-day happenings, connecting with other organisations, helping forest department for more successful rescue and release operations, water testing, nature walk, plastic clean drives.Engaging children and schools located in potential fishing cat population area. Awareness to address Man-animal conflict. Quesstionary survey to learn about the species conception among community. Anti-snare works with forest departments etc.
