Irrawaddy Dolphins

            These Irrawaddy Dolphins(Orcaella Brevirostris Grey) occur in scattered pockets from south east Asia to parts of south Asia. These are classified as “critically endangered” according to IUCN Red list criteria. In India it is classified as Schedule 1 species. These Dolphins inhabits a few estuaries having an easy access to sea as in Chilika, Bhitarkanika, Rushikulya, Devi and Sundarbans(West Bengal).In Odia it is commonly known as BhuasuniMagarorKheraand Sisumar.In Chilika,Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha, the daily and seasonal movements are primarily guided by the availability and movement of prey species, hydrology(inflow of flood water and tidal cycle) and anthropogenic activities.

Chilika having international repute, a Ramsar site is an important wetland for diversity of birds that use the lake feeding, roosting and nesting. It includes both long distance migrants, residential birds and rich Irrawaddy Dolphins.

We are recklessly unleashing new insults on our environment so as a responsible organization background monitoring of wild populations, detect threat and actions against it are timely needed before our wild neigh bours become catastrophes apparent to all.

Conservation Activities: –

  • Proposals are given establishing core conservation areas where gillnetting is banned or severely restricted.
  • Promoting net attendance rules and providing training on the safe release of entangled dolphins.
  • Encouraging the use of fishing gear that does not harm dolphins.
  • Efforts taken reducing by catch and promoting smart fishing with pollution and noise free boating.
  • Participation and presentation of PPTs in most of the coastal villages and are successful to a great extent. 
  • Chilika cleanup drives and awareness campaigns on some small islands inside Chilika.
  • Constant approach towards boat associations keeping safe distance from Dolphins.
  • Concentration to describe changes in Irrawaddy Dolphin numbers and distribution of population.
  • Support to participate census activities.
