Census

Census   wildlife and wild behaviour

Census plays an important and key role in preparing a future management plan. It not only provides the population density of various species but increase/decrease, at different places, habitat type, identifying rare, endangered, extinct thresh hold species, individual species increase/decrease, population on season basis, growth rate, movement pattern longevity, access carrying capacity of habitat etc.

Conducting proper census with date, time, method, sampling percentage, we can help and provide crucial information about the root cause of threatening that damage the habitat.

Mid-winter waterfowl census: –

Jungle lore foundation has participated continuously in mid-winter waterfowl census from its existence. Being trained by BNHS our members are engaged in many wetland areas like Chilika and Bhitarkanika (Ramsar sites). Our annual monitoring with conservation activities has spread beyond the Chilika and Bhitarkanika and has extended to other important wetland areas of Puri, Balasore, Baripada, Berhampur and Sambalpur. Close coordination with forest department, BNHS, research officers, academicians, civil society students, wildlife organisations, service sectors, trade associations we can explore ways to make sure a safe and secure annual migration.

Under the supervision of PCCF(WL) we further participated in various census activities including tiger, Blackbuck, cetaceans, crocodiles in most part of Odisha. We with young researchers, volunteers and conservationalists will engage in more study, protection and development of wild habitats for survival of the future.

Problems of wildlife census is deep seated and mostly evident. Dealing with such shy, secretive, nocturnal and splendid species often make them more difficult to census. Secondly anything profound about wildlife inventory work is very limited. Equipment used are very scant and less expensive. The only way to be more accurate and less expensive is to spend great amount of time, more concentration, with adding experienced wildlife biologists, biotechnicians.
